The adult human body consists of anywhere between 50-65% of water. Some recommend drinking at least 8 fluid ounces of water each day. However, the Institute of Medicine as well as other organizations recommend drinking anywhere between 2.0 to 3.0 liters of water each day. What is the importance of drinking so much water besides the fact that half your body is made up of it? The answer is that because at least half your body is made up of water, the majority of your organs depend on water to function properly.
So why water in particular? And why not any other drinks because most of them are made mostly of water? Well, when you shower everyday you do not shower with Coca-Cola or fruit punch. You shower with pure water and that is what cleans your skin (with the help of soap, of course). In the same way, drinking pure water cleanses out your internal body and organs as it helps remove wastes your body does not need.
Why should you drink so much water a day? During the summer, the answer is obvious. It is hot, you sweat a lot, and water helps keep you cool and hydrated. What about the winter? Actually, it is just as important that you drink enough water in the winter as in the summer. The reason being that during the winter the heat in the house stays on to keep you warm. What you do not realize is that the heat actually ends up dehydrating you. Ever wonder why your skin is dryer in the winter? Water consumption might not be the only reason, but it does affect the moisture of your skin to some extent.
Water consumption for the athletes and the physically active is extremely important as well. Why? Water tends to be more abundant in lean muscle tissue compared to fat tissue. In other words, the more muscle you have or build the more water you will need to help maintain the muscle tissue. Also, to state the obvious, during any and all physical activity you will sweat which will require you to re-hydrate yourself to make up for the amount of water lost in your body.
To conclude, water not only hydrates your body, but it also cleanses out your body inside and out. Water consumption is the best way to keep you from becoming dehydrated and the best way to get rid of toxins and wastes that your body produces. Therefore, drinking water is extremely important for everyone.
